Bespoke Alcove Cupboards & Shelving with Media Wall – Horsham, West Sussex
This project began with a customer in the heart of Horsham, West Sussex, who wanted to make better use of the alcoves either side of their fireplace. While they knew they wanted fitted cupboards, they were unsure of the overall design and how best to transform the space.
The Design
During our initial home consultation, we suggested extending the chimney breast to allow the electric fire to be recessed into the wall. This would create a striking focal point while providing the perfect framework for bespoke fitted cupboards and shelving on either side. The customer loved the idea, and together we developed a design that balanced practicality with contemporary style.
Working closely with the client throughout the design process, we tailored every detail to meet their exact requirements. The finished design included a recessed electric fire, a centrally positioned mirror, a wall-mounted television on the left-hand side with a pull-out bracket for improved viewing angles, handcrafted oak worktops, solid oak floating shelves, and integrated LED lighting to illuminate the display shelving.
The 1st Stage - Fire Place
The first stage of the project involved constructing the new chimney breast framework before carefully installing and recessing the electric fire. Once completed, the structure was plasterboarded, professionally skimmed, and painted in the customer's chosen colour, creating the perfect backdrop for the bespoke cabinetry.
Creating the Cupboards and Shelving
Meanwhile, our craftsmen began manufacturing the fitted furniture in our workshop. Each cupboard was individually built to suit the room, complete with traditional tongue-and-groove shaker doors fitted with premium Blum soft-close hinges. Above the cupboards, bespoke shelving units were constructed with solid oak shelves, each incorporating discreet recessed LED lighting that was pre-installed before fitting. Once completed, every component was professionally painted in our dedicated paint room to achieve a flawless, durable finish.
Final Stage
The final installation saw the bespoke cupboards and shelving expertly fitted on either side of the fireplace. All lighting was wired into the home's existing lighting circuit for seamless operation, while bespoke finishing trims were carefully scribed to the walls and ceilings to create a truly built-in appearance. The television, mounted on a pull-out bracket, and the central mirror were then installed to complete the design.
